How to Show Up in AI Search Answers
How ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews choose which businesses to mention, and the practical steps that make your business easier to find and cite.

To show up in AI search results, your business needs to be easy for AI tools to find, understand and trust. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews build their answers from web pages they can read and sources they consider reliable, so the same fundamentals that help you rank in Google also decide whether AI tools mention you. There is no secret file or special code that guarantees a mention.
Key takeaways
- AI search tools answer from pages they can crawl and index, so a page Google can’t index can’t be cited in AI Overviews.
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimisation beyond normal SEO best practice.
- AI tools must recognise who you are: use one business name, one description and the same links everywhere.
- Independent proof matters most. AI tools lean on reviews, directories and mentions on other websites, not just your own claims.
- Answer real questions clearly, with a direct answer at the top of each section, so any part of your page can be quoted on its own.
How do AI search tools decide which businesses to mention?
AI search tools combine a language model with a live search of the web. When someone asks a question, the tool searches, reads the most relevant pages, and writes an answer from them, usually with links to its sources.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google’s own index. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link.
- ChatGPT search uses OpenAI’s crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block it won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to find and link websites in its answers, and recommends allowing it in your robots.txt file.
In practice, that means two things decide whether you are mentioned: whether the tool can reach your pages, and whether it trusts them enough to quote.
Does my business need special AI optimisation?
No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you don’t need new AI text files or special markup. The work that helps is ordinary, well-done SEO:
- Let search engines crawl your site, and check your hosting or firewall isn’t blocking them.
- Make sure your important pages are indexed. Google Search Console shows which pages are and why others aren’t.
- Keep your key content in text, not only in images or videos.
- Make sure any structured data matches what visitors can see on the page.
- Keep your Google Business Profile accurate and complete.
Be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed AI ranking. Nobody controls what these tools say, and Google says even meeting its requirements doesn’t guarantee a page will be shown.
How do I make sure AI tools know who my business is?
Describe your business the same way everywhere. AI tools build their picture of you from your website, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles and directory listings. When those sources disagree, the tools can confuse you with someone else or simply leave you out.
- Use one name. Write your business name the same way on your website, Business Profile and every social profile.
- Use one description. A single, plain sentence about who you help and what you do, repeated across profiles.
- Link everything together. Your website should link to your official profiles, and each profile should link back to your website.
- Explain the person behind the business on an about page: who runs it, where, and what experience they have.
We tested this on our own business. In October 2026 we asked 16 questions across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Most tools described us correctly when asked our name directly. But one tool confused us with a well-known organisation with a similar name, and another invented a job title for our founder. Clear, consistent identity signals are the fix for exactly that kind of mistake.
Why do reviews and other websites matter so much?
AI tools trust what other people say about you more than what you say about yourself. When we asked whether our own studio was a good choice, two different tools noted that they could find our website and portfolio but little independent review evidence.
- Ask happy clients for reviews on your Google Business Profile and on an industry directory.
- Claim relevant directory listings with the same name and description. For several questions we tested, AI answers quoted directories directly.
- Earn mentions through partner credits, guest articles, podcasts and case studies your clients are happy to share.
Never write, buy or incentivise reviews. Fake reviews break the rules of the platforms and consumer law in the UK and US, and they undermine the trust they were meant to build. Our guide on building a trustworthy online presence covers this in more detail.
How should I write content that AI tools will quote?
Answer the questions your customers actually ask, clearly and early. AI tools often lift a short passage that answers the question directly, so structure each page so any section can stand on its own.
- Use real questions as headings, the way people type or say them.
- Start each section with a one- or two-sentence answer, then add detail, steps and examples.
- Be specific. Real prices, real steps and real experience are more useful than general advice.
- Show who wrote it and why. Google’s guidance on helpful content names trust as the most important quality and suggests making authorship clear.
- Cite reliable sources for facts, rules and statistics.
Our guide to SEO audits and implementation explains how to find which of your pages need this work first.
Should I block or allow AI crawlers?
If you want to be mentioned in AI search answers, allow the search crawlers. Blocking them removes you from those answers.
- Googlebot controls whether your pages can appear in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- OAI-SearchBot controls whether you can appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI’s separate GPTBot is for model training, and you can block it while still allowing search.
- PerplexityBot controls whether Perplexity can find and link your pages.
If you use a firewall or bot protection service, check it isn’t blocking these crawlers by default.
How do I measure my AI search visibility?
Pick a fixed list of questions your customers ask, and check monthly whether AI tools mention or link to you. Record the result for each tool, and note which websites they cite instead, because those are the sources you need to match or appear on.
In Google Search Console, traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in your normal Performance report under the Web search type, so the indexing and query work you already do covers it.

FAQ
Common questions.
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make sure ChatGPT’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, can reach your site, describe your business consistently everywhere, and build independent proof such as reviews and directory listings. Nobody can guarantee a mention, but these steps make you easier to find and trust.
Do I need special SEO for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, so normal SEO best practice is what helps.
Does an llms.txt file help me appear in AI search?
Google says you don’t need new AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. An llms.txt file does no harm, but it won’t replace indexed pages, consistent business details and reviews.
Should I block AI crawlers on my website?
Only if you don’t want to appear in those tools. Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from ChatGPT search or Perplexity answers. You can block OpenAI’s training crawler, GPTBot, separately while still allowing search.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
It depends on how quickly your pages are crawled and how much independent proof exists about your business. Brand questions often improve first; general topic questions take longer and need strong, well-cited content.
