Local SEO for Tradespeople: A Practical Checklist
What roofers, builders, joiners and other trades can do to show up when people nearby search for their services.
When someone’s roof is leaking or they need a kitchen fitted, they search for help nearby, often on their phone. Local SEO is the work of making sure your business appears in those searches and that people trust what they see. Here’s a practical checklist, roughly in the order we’d tackle it.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
- Use your real business name, without extra keywords added.
- Choose the primary category that best matches your main service, then add relevant secondary categories.
- Set your service areas if you travel to customers, or your address if customers visit you.
- Add opening hours, including emergency availability if you offer it.
- Upload photos of your own work, vehicles and team. Real photos build more trust than stock images.
- List your services with short descriptions.
2. Keep your details identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile and directories. Small differences, such as an old phone number on one directory, can make it harder for search engines to trust which details are correct.
3. Build a page for each main service
Roof repairs, new roofs, guttering and chimney work are different searches from different customers. Give each main service its own page covering what’s included, the areas you cover, how quoting works and photos of jobs you’ve done.
4. Add area pages only when they’re genuinely useful
Pages for the towns you cover can help, but only if each one has something real to say: jobs you’ve done there, local considerations or how quickly you can reach that area. Copy-paste pages that only swap the town name rarely help and can make your site look low quality.
5. Ask for reviews, every time
- Make it a habit to ask when a job is finished and the customer is happy.
- Send a direct link to your Google review form so it takes seconds.
- Reply to reviews, including critical ones, politely and specifically.
- Never buy reviews or offer incentives for positive ones. It breaks platform rules and undermines trust.
6. Use the directories your customers use
Trade directories send enquiries directly and help confirm your details. Which ones matter depends on your country: in the UK, sites like Checkatrade, TrustATrader and MyBuilder; in Australia, hipages and Oneflare; in the US, Angi, Yelp and Nextdoor. Choose the ones customers in your area actually use and keep your listings current.
7. Make your website work on a phone
- A tap-to-call phone number at the top of every page.
- A short quote form: name, contact details, postcode or ZIP code, the job and optional photos.
- Pages that load quickly on mobile data.
- Accreditations and memberships you actually hold, shown clearly.
8. Add structured data
Structured data is code that tells search engines your business type, services, areas and contact details in a consistent format. A developer can add it to your site template once, and it then applies to every page.
9. Make sure enquiries reach you
Ranking well is wasted if quote requests land in a spam folder or an inbox nobody checks. Send every enquiry to a phone or inbox you watch, reply automatically to confirm you’ve got it and test the form regularly. Our guide to why website enquiries go missing explains how.
10. Track what’s working
Use Google Search Console to see which searches show your site and the performance data in your Business Profile to see calls and direction requests. Check them monthly and adjust your service pages based on what people search for.
Where to start
If you only do three things this month, complete your Google Business Profile, make your contact details consistent and ask your last five happy customers for a review. See how we help trades and home service businesses, including our work for Homestyle Roofing.
